Bushyleaze Trout Lake

A great place to learn the art of fly fishing

Bushyleaze is a large clear water spring fed Trout lake in the heart of the Cotswolds. Surrounded by trees and fields it is an ideal location to spend a day (or half-day) learning to catch Trout with a fly. It has big hatches of flies and excellent dry fly fishing and nymph fishing. As well as bank fishing and wading there are boats available for use by fly fishers. It is a fly fishing only lake with no disturbance from other water users.

Bushyleaze is located in Gloucestershire, between Swindon and Oxford, less than a mile to the east of the picturesque small Cotswolds town of Lechlade.

At Bushyleaze Go Fly Fishing UK do fly fishing lessons for complete beginners and improvers tuition for people who can already fish but want to improve their technique and increase their catches. It is an ideal learning environment and Bushyleaze gives everybody a very good chance of catching some good sized Trout during their tuition. Note that we do not provide just day rod access to fish without a guide/instructor.

Fish species / seasons

The water contains good sized Rainbow Trout, some of which are over 10lbs, and Brown Trout. The fishery is open all year round (except Christmas Day). On a full day booking up to four Rainbow Trout can be taken for eating or three fish on a half-day. The lakes fish well all year round.

A 9 foot rod for a 6-weight floating line is ideal for Bushyleaze. Our instructors will loan you all the required fly fishing tackle, flies, etc. – or you can bring and use your own. Tackle loan is free included in our normal charge. Usually a 6lb breaking strain tippet is recommended because of the size and strength of some of the Trout. Beginners might opt for an 8lb line in dull weather conditions but in bright conditions in the summer months it might be necessary to go down to a 5lb breaking strain fluorocarbon tippet to increase the frequency of bites. Because of the clarity of the water it’s a good idea to use a long leader.

Make sure you have a decent sized landing net and a pair of polarised sunglasses.

Bushyleaze is an excellent dry fly and nymph fishing water. Good nymph fly choices include Buzzers, Diawl Bach, Damsel nymphs, Montana’s, Pheasant tail nymph and Gold Ribbed Hare’s Ear. Bushyleaze is an excellent surface and dry fly water most of the year round with buzzers, sedges, mayflies, olives and daddy long legs all being there in large quantities, depending on the season.

As the water is usually very clear it is a very good stalking water. Walk slowly round the lake looking in the margins for signs of fish. If there is a breeze then pay particular attention to the side of the lake towards which the breeze is blowing. Also take note of rising fish and try to judge their direction of swimming before placing your fly with a careful cast just ahead of the fish. And unlike many stillwaters there are parts of the lake where you can wade out to reach fish cruising a little further out from the bank. Or take a boat out to get to those distant fish.

All our fly fishing instructors are trained and licensed and hold nationally recognised fly fishing coaching qualifications. We do private fly fishing lessons of a full or half-day duration for from one to four people. Our instructors will teach you correct fly casting technique and then continue to coach you in your fly casting while also introducing you to the various techniques of dry fly and wet fly (nymph) fishing.

If you would like a full two day introduction to fly fishing you could start off with a day of stillwater fly fishing tuition at Bushyleaze and then move on to the nearby River Coln for a day of river tuition in picture postcard Cotswolds scenery. An ideal and very enjoyable way to get into fly fishing and learn most of the key skills of Trout fly fishing.
