The River Windrush

Flowing through beautiful Oxfordshire countryside

In the Cotswolds the pretty River Windrush flows from Cutsdean in Gloucestershire past perfect English countryside scenery and some of the Cotswolds finest towns and villages to join the River Thames just to the west of Oxford. It contains a large population of Brown Trout and Grayling.

Go Fly Fishing UK has a decade of experience in offering guided days and fly fishing tuition days in the Cotswolds. We provide top class guided fly fishing days and private fly fishing tuition days on the River Windrush, River Coln and many Cotswolds Trout lake fly fishing locations.

Fly fishing on the River Windrush

For most of the season the River Windrush is not a clear water stream. The nearby River Coln is a clear water stream and thus provides better dry fly fishing than the River Windrush. But the River Windrush does provide challenging interesting sport for proficient fly fishers and holds a big head of wild Brown Trout. We have access to the river near to Witney and near to Burford.

If you fancy making your fly fishing day part of a short-break in the Cotswolds then we can advise you on the best accommodation options. These including manor house hotels, country hotels, inns and bed & breakfasts, some of which are within easy walking distance of superb fishing.

Fish species / seasons

The River Windrush contains wild and stocked Brown Trout and wild Grayling. The Trout season runs from 1st April to 30th September with Grayling being in season from 16th June to 14th March.

Tackle

The River Windrush is mostly a fairly narrow river. An 8' or 8’ 6'' rod for a 4 or 5-weight floating line is ideal. Loan of all the necessary fly fishing tackle, flies, etc. is free included in our guiding/tuition charge.

Tactics

The River Windrush is best fished by casting upstream from a position on the bank. Wading is not necessary. Because the water is often a little murky nymph fishing is usually the best tactic to catch the Trout. Small lightly weighted nymphs – perhaps with a small gold or copper beadhead – are very successful. Move slowly upstream covering every likely spot and you are likely to be rewarded by some beautiful wild Brown Trout and perhaps Grayling. Occasionally the dry fly sport can be good, especially in a Mayfly hatch, but for better dry fly fishing head for the nearby River Coln.

Guides/Instructors

Our local guides know the River Windrush very well and they will give you the best possible chance of catching fish and having an enjoyable and successful day. As well as providing a superb fly fishing guide service our guides will also loan all the required fly fishing tackle, waders, flies, etc. - or you can bring your own - and can provide a railway station collection/return service for fishers. This would usually be from Oxford station (about 60 minutes from London Paddington). All our fly fishing guides are also trained and qualified fly fishing instructors.

Costs

River Windrush fishing access costs are very reasonable. Our guided day charges (including guide, day rod fishing access charge, tackle loan and, if required, local railway station or accommodation collection/return) start at just £189 for one person in the 1st October to 14th March season and £229 in the 1st April to 30th September season, with the total cost depending on the number of fishers and the season. Note that we do not provide just day rod water access to fish without a guide/instructor.
