Fly fishing at Avington Trout Lakes

Avington Trout Lakes

Premier Hampshire stillwater Trout fly fishing

Avington is without doubt one of the top 10 and most famous stillwater Trout fisheries in the UK – famous for its large Rainbow Trout. Its three crystal clear lakes are fed by the adjacent River Itchen. Situated in beautiful peaceful central Hampshire countryside about five miles north east of Winchester and within easy travelling distance of Southampton, Basingstoke and London.

The lakes are situated on private land with no public access to the lakeside. There is a fishing lodge with very good facilities and a tackle shop.

Fly fishing at Avington Trout Lakes

Go Fly Fishing UK arrange private guided fly fishing days and half-days at Avington. All tackle, including flies, is provided or you can bring and use your own. The lakes are a special fly fishing environment where fly fishers can learn the art of stalking for large Trout in crystal clear water.

Fish species / seasons

Well stocked primarily with large Rainbow Trout from 4lbs up to 20lbs but also with Brown Trout and Blue Trout. The fishery record for a Rainbow Trout is 28lb and for Brown Trout a massive 22lb 8oz. Fishing for wild Brown Trout and Grayling is also available on the River Itchen carrier stream which runs alongside the lakes.

Avington is open most days all year round. You must call to check availability and fishing must be pre-booked in advance.

Tackle

A rod of around 9’ for a 6 or 7-weight floating line is ideal. Our instructors will loan all the required fly fishing tackle, flies, etc. – or you can bring and use your own. Usually a minimum 8lb breaking strain tippet is recommended. But in bright conditions in the summer months it might be necessary to go down to a 6lb breaking strain fluorocarbon tippet to increase the frequency of bites.

In the River Itchen carrier stream use scaled down tackle like a 7’- 8’ 3 or 4-weight rod and a 3lb fluorocarbon tippet.

Tactics

Perhaps the most successful tactic at Avington is to walking slowly along the bank and stalk individual fish which are lying close in to the edge, under the trees or close to weed beds. Dry flies can be successful in the summer months but most of the big fish are caught fishing weighted sinking flies. Successful fly patterns include buzzers, bloodworms, assorted damsel nymphs and Montana’s.

In the River Itchen carrier stream try small (size 16) flies such as Pheasant Tail Nymph, Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph and when the fish are rising a size 16 Parachute Adams or Tups Indispensable dry fly should work. This is catch and release fishing with barbless hooks.

Guides / Instructors

All our fly fishing fly fishing guides/instructors are trained and hold nationally recognised fly fishing coaching qualifications. They can provide a local railway station (Winchester or Alton) or accommodation collection and return service. Both tackle loan and our collection/return service are free included in our normal charge.
