Fly fishing at Frensham Trout Lakes

John O Gaunt's Trout Lakes

Hampshire stillwater Trout fly fishing in the beautiful River Test valley

The John O Gaunt’s Trout lakes are two small spring-fed fly fishing lakes in the heart of the Test Valley. They are situated in Hampshire about mid-way between the towns of Romsey and Andover and within easy travelling distance of Southampton, Eastleigh, Winchester, Salisbury and Basingstoke.

The lakes are situated just 200 yards from the world famous River Test and as such they enjoy all the same natural fly life as the river…and more. For example like the River Test there is a Mayfly hatch but the lakes also have large numbers of Damsel flies – the nymphs providing good feeding for the Trout all year round. The lakes are situated on private land with no public access to the lakeside.

John O Gaunt's Trout Lakes

Go Fly Fishing UK do private fly fishing lessons at John O Gaunt’s and our local trained / qualified fly fishing instructor has been working there for over ten years. All tackle, including flies, can be provided. The lakes are ideal for tuition with large grass areas to practice casting and with excellent bank access. At John O Gaunt’s is is likely that everybody will catch some good sized Trout during their tuition.

Fish species / seasons

Well stocked primarily with quality Rainbow Trout but also some Brown Trout, all of a good average size with some bigger fish always present to keep anglers on their toes.

John O Gaunt's lakes are open every day from 1st February to 30th November and then on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 1st December to 31st January.

A rod of around 9’ for a 6-weight line is ideal. Rarely would there be any need to use other than a floating line. Our instructors will loan all the required fly fishing tackle, flies, etc. – or you can bring and use your own. Usually a minimum 6lb breaking strain tippet is recommended. Beginners might opt for an 8lb line in dull weather conditions but in bright conditions in the summer months it might be necessary to go down to a 5lb breaking strain fluorocarbon tippet to increase the frequency of bites.

The lakes are renowned for dry fly fishing and fish can be taken “off the top” throughout the year in all but the bleakest of conditions. Favored flies are the Grey Wulff, Hawthorn, Adams, Sedge and the ever popular Daddy. Buzzers and nymphs fished close to the surface can see prolific sport and of course the sunken Damsel Nymph, in all its permutations, will sort out some good fish. Fish are found all over the lakes and very often close to the banks, which makes long distance casting unnecessary.

All our fly fishing instructors are trained and hold nationally recognised fly fishing coaching qualifications. They can provide a local railway station (Winchester) or accommodation collection and return service. Both tackle loan and our collection/return service are free included in our normal charge.

A full day of private tuition for one person costs a total of just £199 (half-day £129). Prices are lower in the November to March season. The cost per person is considerably lower for groups of from two to four friends, relatives or colleagues. Check out our 'Fly Fishing Lessons' 'Prices - Tuition' web page for full details of all our prices and options. Note that we do not provide just day rod access to fish without a guide/instructor.

Client testimonials

"Thank you Stephen. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and it was great that we all caught fish. We are planning to come back in September."

John Godding - Fly fishing tuition day, John O Gaunt's - April 2013

"Hi Stephen, Thank you for emailing over the photos. Its great to have a record of a very enjoyable and memorable day. We both had a great time and learnt a lot more than we expected to in just one day. Your patience was much appreciated, and it was good to learn about the theory as well as the practical aspects of fly fishing. We have both caught the fly fishing bug and are looking to get ourselves kitted out and back out there very soon."
