Fly fishing at Spring Hill Trout Lakes

Spring Hill Trout Lakes

Kent stillwater Trout fly fishing in the beautiful upper Medway valley

The Spring Hill Trout lakes are a series of small spring-fed fly fishing lakes. They are situated in beautiful peaceful rolling Kent countryside about five miles north east of Royal Tunbridge Wells and within easy travelling distance of Maidstone, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks and south east London.

The lakes and adjacent land are in an area of outstanding natural beauty and are home to lots of interesting bird species and other flora and fauna. The lakes are situated on private land with no public access to the lakeside. There is a fishing lodge with good facilities and great views over the Medway valley.

Fly fishing at Spring Hill Trout Lakes

Go Fly Fishing UK arrange private fly fishing lessons at Spring Hill. All tackle, including flies, is provided. The lakes are ideal for learning the art of fly fishing with grass areas to practice casting and excellent bank access to the lakes where you can cast from platforms.

Fish species / seasons

Well stocked primarily with quality Rainbow Trout and Blue Trout, but also some Brown Trout, all of a good average size with some bigger fish up to over 10lbs. The fishery record for a Rainbow Trout is 18lb 4oz and for a Brown Trout 9lbs.

Spring Hill is open most days all year round.

Tackle

A rod of around 9’ for a 5 or 6-weight floating line is ideal. Our instructors will loan all the required fly fishing tackle, flies, etc. – or you can bring and use your own. Usually a minimum 6lb breaking strain tippet is recommended. Beginners might opt for an 8lb line in dull weather conditions but in bright conditions in the summer months it might be necessary to go down to a 5lb breaking strain fluorocarbon tippet to increase the frequency of bites.

Tactics

In the late-spring and summer months floating lines are sufficient, although in the event of any prolonged warm conditions a switch to intermediate and sinking lines works well. Top flies at Spring Hill include damsels, hare’s ears, cat’s whiskers, buzzers and assorted dry flies.

Instructors

All our fly fishing instructors are trained and hold nationally recognised fly fishing coaching qualifications. They can provide a local railway station (Royal Tunbridge Wells) or accommodation collection and return service. Both tackle loan and our collection/return service are free included in our normal charge.

Costs

A full day of private tuition for one person costs a total of just £199 (half-day £129). Prices are lower in the November to March season. The cost per person is considerably lower for groups of from two to four friends, relatives or colleagues. Check out our 'Fly Fishing Lessons' 'Prices - Tuition' web page for full details of all our prices and options.
